The Best Hikes in Ithaca for a Winter Getaway

The Best Hikes in Ithaca for a Winter Getaway

Winter is an incredibly divisive season- while some of us are excitedly embracing the cold, others are well into our winter hibernation. But, whether you are a fan of winter or not, there’s no denying the beauty of snow-covered landscapes. Ithaca, in particular, transforms into a wonderland of frozen waterfalls that beckons you to get outside and explore the outdoors in the dead of winter. La Tourelle is centrally located near three state parks where you can experience some of the best hikes in Ithaca year-round. So, get out of the house, and spend a weekend exploring the scenic trails in the Finger Lakes.

Buttermilk Falls State Park

The Gorge Trail and the Northside of Lake Treman Trail are closed at this state park for the winter. The remaining trails are open to the public year-round for hiking. You can easily access the Lower Falls from the parking lot and view the frozen waterfall before hitting the trails. Some open trails during winter include Bear Trail, Larch Meadow Trail, and Owl Creek.

Taughannock Falls State Park

You can find some of the best hikes in Ithaca at Taughhannock Falls State Park. Taughannock Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Finger Lakes that freezes over in a magical display of the season. The overlook is open, but if you want to hike here, explore one of these trails:

  • Black Diamond Trail: This scenic eight-mile trail follows the western edge of Cayuga Lake and winds through various landscapes. The trail has beautiful views of gorges, waterfalls, and small cascades.

  • Gorge Trail: If you want to get a closer view of Taughannock Falls, then take this one-mile trail. The trail is flat and wide, so everyone will be able to enjoy the views of the waterfall.

Robert H. Treman State Park

Right down the road from Taugannock, you will find Robert H. Treman State Park. We highly recommend stopping here to take a short hike to Lucifer Falls. The Rim Trail is open year-round so that you can view this beautiful waterfall during winter. If you are interested in a long walk through the upland forests, consider the Finger Lakes Trail.
